What Happens if I'm Injured While in an Uber?

Many of us regularly take advantage of rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft to conveniently get us from one place to another without the hassle of driving, navigating, and parking ourselves. But what happens if our rideshare driver is involved in a crash and we're injured?

Multiple Policies May Apply

In some cases, more than one insurance policy may apply when your Uber driver is involved in a crash while you're in their vehicle.  The driver's rideshare company should have at least $1 million in coverage that applies when the driver is transporting passengers (or on their way to pick passengers up). If the crash involves another driver, that driver's insurance policy may also cover your injuries, and if that driver happens to be working for a rideshare company at the time of the crash, that company's insurance may also apply.

An experienced rideshare accident attorney will be able to identify the potentially responsible insurance companies and file the appropriate claims on your behalf.

What to Do if You're Involved in a Rideshare Crash

First, of course, you need to make sure your injuries are identified and cared for. Don't assume that you're not injured because you may be able to walk away from the crash. See a doctor and pay attention to how you're feeling over the next few days.

If you can, take pictures of the crash scene or ask someone else to do it for you and send them to you. Get names and contact information for as many witnesses as possible and the driver's license information for all drivers involved in the crash. Don't speak with anyone from any insurance company until you have contacted an attorney.

The sooner you contact an experienced rideshare accident attorney, the more likely you will be to recover all you're entitled. Your attorney will help ensure you have all the information needed to file and pursue claims for your injuries and will negotiate with the insurer (or insurers) on your behalf. Where necessary, they can sue the responsible parties for your injuries.
